Columbus Day

Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. At least that is what all elementary school children were always taught: “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” Of course, Columbus never did “discover” North America, and the regions he did explore were already inhabited.

First, because the “rename Columbus Day movement” seemed to crop up in force around the time that the idea that Columbus was a crypto-Jew was gaining traction, and it felt to me like it was sort of implicitly anti-Semitic, that folks felt like they *could* attack Columbus now that he was part of the Scheming Class.
